  • "Fifty-over cricket will hold its own" - says Ponting based on CT, but what does ICC need to do to ensure it?

    Friends,

Ponting thinks this has been the best organized CT he says:

""I was worried at the time when 20-over cricket became as popular as it did that we might start playing a few less 50-over games, but I think tournaments like this can only help the game.

"I've really enjoyed the tournament and I think the fans around South Africa have enjoyed the tournament, so it's got some endorsement from me, and even a low-scoring game like today can probably be one of the more entertaining games that you can watch and be involved in as a player."

Ponting, who also picked up the Player-of-the-Series and Golden bat awards after his side defended their title, has played in all six editions of the Champions Trophy. But he said the latest edition, which was reduced to only eight teams for the first time, had been the best organised.

i found this mini wc as the best since 2000 edition..no meaningless matches, tight, compact, small and fortunately played on pitches of south africa providing even bat ball contest like the two t20 world cups in sa and eng(not the usually flat, slow and dead tracks of subcontinent)..it was very exciting and gripping to see depleted nz side defending a small total with bond and mills especially troubling australian top order with the new ball in final..but sadly icc hasnt taken any cue from compact format of this champions trophy and a disastrous last ODI wc as it has again included 14 teams for wc2011..this means again we'll have too many one sided useless contests(like ind vs netherlands, aus vs canada etc.)..12 teams r enuf in ODI wc like 1996 and 1999 editions..if icc wants to promote cricket in other nations it shud do it with t20 format..have 16 teams in a t20 wc coz it offers more chance for weaker teams to surprise strong ones..and even if contest is one sided it finishes in 3hrs

    1) Do you agree or disagree with these 2 views, if not why not?

    2) Do you think ICC needs to do something more to ensure that 50-50 cricket may not have the same fate as archaeopteryx lithographica?

  • First of all we should stop forcing people to keep ODI cricket alive. In the end it's the fans who decide which format should be played by the cricketers.

ICC is doing everything it can to ensure that 50- 50 over cricket survives this onslaught by the popularity of T20's. ODI cricket is profitable for ICC as it generated more profit then the T20 tournament.

ICC champions trophy winners get $ 2 Million

    The T20 Champions get $ 490,000

So it's quite obvious that the ICC wants ODI cricket to survive but the cricket fans want T20. They believe that if we play more T20 cricket players wont get exhausted, injuries can be avoided and a tour can be wrapped up in just 15 odd days.

I'd suggest you should have a look at this question which I posted a few days ago.

  • What do you think of BCCI's influence, India SL series without UDRS?

    http://www.cricinfo.com/sri-lanka-v-india-2010/content/current/story/466719.html

    I like it.

PS: India will now play more tests. T20 cricket was going on the rise because India won world cup in 2007 so T20 format was bound to reach the sky but good news for traditional fans India's no.1 rank has ensured that Test cricket will be saved.

I think India should next order ICC to send nomination of cricket for Olympics. That will make cricket more global sport. Don't you think cricket needs it? IOC is already interested to include cricket in their chart.
@ 3rd answer : last time we didn't know it would turn out to be such a disaster for India. Rightly decided by BCCI to ensure a "clean" series this time.

  • Now that Tendulkar's records look out of reach, should 'SELFISH' Ponting retire from cricket?

Let's face it, the only thing he is playing for now is getting the two world records in test cricket from Tendulkar i.e. Most runs and most centuries respectively.

He has been badly out of form for 2 years scoring at a very ordinary 35 runs per test. The double he got last test which gave some hope to his fans was also due to missed chances from Pakistani fielders, should have been out on duck.

So he has lost it Scoring 2 centuries a year now at below 40 and continuing to play just because the hope he h had once upon a time that he could be ahead of Tendulkar at least on stats for tests.

Sachin on the other hand looks at peak once again and with 4 consecutive hundreds he is almost way past Ponting and going further. BCCI will surely get another 5-6 test this year with the kind of pressure there is on them in order to make sure India gets full chance to defend #1 test rank.
And Australia will play nearly 18 tests till the end of 2011.
India will i think play close to 15-15, so not much difference there.

Tendulkar looks fresh, young, fit and is scoring at even better rate than Ponting with an already huge lead of 1500+ test runs and 8 centuries

    He's safe !
Ponting is close to say -i quit
