The 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup Final was the sixth installment of the ICC Cricket World Cup since its inception in 1975 in England. The match was played on 17 March 1996 at Lahore's 62645 capacity Gaddafi Stadium in Pakistan for the first time. The match was contested between former World Cup winners Australia and underdog Sri Lanka. It was Australia's third World Cup final appearance after their win in the 1987 edition and the loss to West Indies in the 1975 ICC Cricket World Cup final. Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga won the toss and sent Australia out to bat. After a blazing start from captain Mark Taylor and young superstar and future captain Ricky Ponting, Australia fell from being 1-137 to 5-170 after which Sri Lanka's 4 prong spin attack took its toll. After Australia limped to 7-241 in its quota of 50 overs, Sri Lanka overcame a nervous start where they lost both openers before the score was 30, to win in 45 overs. Sri Lankan batting sensation Aravinda De Silva played a match-winning knock of 107 not out and was assisted ably by fellow veterans Asanka Gurusingha (65) and captain Ranatunga (47 not out). De Silva was named man of the match after he had taken 3-42 in his 10 overs eairlier in the Australian innings as well. Credit - Dinal goonawardana. Full Scorecard - www.espncricinfo.com

@itsgonnabefullon i watched this game (am an Indian) first ball to last.. and my end-year exams were on I remember.. what fantastic collapse in the last 6 overs it was.. and that Fleming to Richardson ball in the last over.. :)

  • itsgonnabefullon
A bit of an underrated or often forgotten game this one I reckon .. vaguely remember some Fleming heroics in the WI innings?

  • dilkashh
48/4 after 21.1 overs. then comes law. oh yeeeaaahhhhhh.

  • wisden550
My Dad went to school with Stuart Law. 54 seemed to be his lucky number - he made 54* in his only Test innings, played 54 ODIs...

  • robelinda
@183night I had uploaded that innings before but took it down due to insane comments by sachin fans.

  • 183night
@robelinda hey rob can you find SINGER WORLD SERIES and upload it,IND won that series as sachin got his first 100 there against AUS he slammed WARNE and MCGRATH all over the park, sachin met warne and mcgrath at sharjah 94,colombo 94,wellington 95 IND won all the matches to loose this IMP WORLD CUP game where MWAUGH destroyed them..

  • FlyingPig1902
Injuries have forced him to limit his range of shots

  • crazycurry90
    you fkn legend.

  • robelinda
@kssjp191 Indeed, smart bowling from Junior!!!

  • ritadhishankar
Absiolutely fantastic innings! Thank you so much for sharing! However, he is way more compact nowadays...he looked quite restless through that innings, possibly pressurized by the fact that the game would be lost if he was dismissed...90 out of 140 and tremendous acceleration if you consider that he only scored 5 from his first 16 balls...comes to around 85 from the last 68! Thanks again for sharing!

This is an awesome post. Sachin was batting brilliantly and Waugh came, got Sachin under control, and took a really smart wicket. This innings pretty much summed up the match given how everything went pear-shaped for India soonafter

  • vijayhitler
lol @"he single handedly keeps India in the contest, before he loses his cool and loses the match"

  • robelinda
@vsriv911 Yes i have both those innings ball by ball, might upload one day!

  • robelinda
@TheSinnical They also played against each other later in 1994 in the Singer World Series, and in 1995 in the NZ Centenary Tournament.

  • robelinda
@TheSinnical Yeah they met in 1994 in the 1st semi final of the Australasia Cup, killer series too.

  • TheSinnical
i believe *this* was the 1st meeting between Warnie, McGrath & Sachin, barring a random series played here & there....

  • robelinda
@acgsrt Sachin sent everyones pulses racing back then, magical player when he was attacking. Pity those days ended a long time ago, his shot range was awesome.

  • acgsrt
Awesome upload, Rob! You made my day. I was 10 years old when this match was played and took a day off from school to watch it. Sachin sent our pulses racing then.

  • chadivadi
the 3rd ball was pretty close, cant understand why the bowler didnt appeal

  • DiponSarker
    Thanks Rob.

  • rk1271
Great compilation! Thank you for the effort and passion, Rob.

  • madaboutsleep
This was when him and Lara were at the very top of their games (in terms of temperament and technique) in my opinion. Nice upload.

  • arvindr25
thanks for this rob. brings back memories of the days when the three best batsmen in the world were Lara, Tendulkar and Mark Waugh.
