WI vs Pak, Birmingham, 1975 World Cup - Pak innings

  • Posted By TheThirdUmpire

The eighth match of the inaugural World Cup was held at Edgbaston, and with Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal and young all-rounder Imran Khan unavailable because of injury, few expected much against the powerhouse West Indians. The pundits were proved wrong by a masterly innings from Majid Khan, combining patience with bold shot-making. Majid made 60, receiving help from Zaheer Abbas (31) Mushtaq Mohammad (55) and a hard-hitting Wasim Raja (58 from 57 balls). Pakistan made 7/266 from its 60 over allotment, and had Majid and Wasim not been unlucklily dismissed 'playing on', the total might have been larger. Pakistan's healthy total would set up one of the most thrilling matches in World Cup history. Match scorecard: www.cricinfo.com Yours in cricket, The Third Ump
