Eng vs Aus, World Cup semi-final, Leeds 1975 - Aus innings

In most situations Australia's victory target of 94 would have been easy. But with the Headingly wicket still green and lively, and England sporting an attack of Snow, Arnold, Lever and Old, it would prove anything but easy. The English seamers rampaged through the Australian top order, reducing them to 6/39. John Snow snared the vital wickets of the Chappell, both LBW in near identical circumstances, then local hero Chris Old bowled McCosker, Edwards and Marsh in quick succession. Australia's last hopes were Doug Walters and Gary Gilmour, the latter driving intrepidly through mid off. They took the score to 73 when Gilmour edged to second slip, where Tony Greig spilled the chance. That would prove England's last hope of victory as Australia passed the target with no further loss. Gilmour was man of the match to nobody's surprise. Match scorecard: www.cricinfo.com Yours in cricket, The Third Ump
