Impetuous batting and some great Pakistani bowling decimated the West Indies' batting card early on. Safraz Nawaz's swing and seam both ways saw the end of Greenidge, Fredericks and then Kallicharan, then Kanhai played on and Richards threw his wicket away. Only Clive Lloyd (53) stood in the way of a Pakistan victory, but when he was given out controversially, West Indies still needed 116 with only three wickets in hand. Wicketkeeper Derek Murray and fast bowlers Vanburn Holder and Andy Roberts refused to surrender, however, batting aggressively and running well between the wickets. Murray (61 not out) and Roberts (24 not out) added an astonishing 64 for the tenth wicket to secure a West Indian victory in the final over. So unlikely did a West Indian win seem that man-of-the-match adjudicator Tom Graveney gave the award to Sarfraz then went for a beer - at the fall of the eighth wicket (he later admitted he'd been too hasty with his decision).
